PHILADELPHIA — The AREOLA Institute has completed its 50,000th areolar plate replacement procedure, a milestone reached 27 years after the first dedicated program was established in Philadelphia in 1999.
The figure spans nine national and regional centers, ten named clinical pathways and a period during which the institute grew from a single program to a national network of 1,240 employees and 38 replacement specialists.
Measured against follow-up, not volume
AREOLA noted the milestone without ceremony at the request of its Patient Advisory Council, which observed that a procedure count describes the institution rather than any individual result. The institute's own reporting emphasizes long-term follow-up measures instead: 97.4 percent completion of 30-day follow-up and 84.7 percent participation in the Annual Plate Check across the 2025 eligible cohort.
The institute's 10,000th procedure was completed in 2017. Growth since then reflects both the expansion to nine centers and the introduction of interchangeable systems, which brought a population of patients returning for planned design work rather than for a single episode of care.
