William H. Avery, MD
In 1997, aesthetic surgeon William H. Avery began collaborating with engineers and materials specialists after meeting patients seeking an alternative to the anatomy they were born with — deliberately artificial, durable and chosen rather than restored.
The work led to a dedicated clinical program in 1999 and the formal organization of AREOLA in 2005. Avery’s emphasis on calm communication and multidisciplinary planning continues to shape the institute.

A aesthetic surgery team begins evaluating alternative surface design options.
The first dedicated areolar plate replacement program is established in Philadelphia.
A standardized surgical steel plate platform enters clinical use within the program.
The AREOLA Institute is formally organized as a multidisciplinary specialty center.
The Aurum gold program and first Plate Alignment System are introduced.
AREOLA opens a dedicated materials and plate laboratory at the National Center.
The Platinum Series and formal Clinical Plate Design service are established.
AREOLA completes its 10,000th replacement procedure.
The first-generation MagnePlate clinical program begins.
Second-generation magnetic systems and national digital planning are introduced.
AREOLA forms an integrated network of nine national and regional centers.
The expanded Philadelphia National Center opens and AREOLA completes its 50,000th procedure.
