James framed houses for nineteen years before his first replacement and has framed them for six years since. He came to the Dallas center after relocating from another region, looking for a team to take over an existing system and, in his words, to tell him honestly whether he had made a mistake.

The system was specified against the heaviest of those with margin, and the plan documents the range. He was also told plainly what it would not do, which he says mattered more than what it would.
Six years on he is matter-of-fact about it. “The guys on my crew took about a week to stop making jokes and about a month to start asking where I had it done,” he says. “Two of them have been now. One of them went to a different place and wishes he had not.”
