What the department studies
Surface Biology examines the tissue side of the interface: how skin adjacent to a plate behaves over years, how finish and profile relate to local irritation, and which surface characteristics are associated with settled, comfortable long-term results.
Why finish is a biological question
Finish is usually discussed as an aesthetic choice, but a surface that holds moisture, catches fabric or is difficult to clean has biological consequences. The department's work is why finish guidance differs by material rather than being a single institutional rule.
Working with clinical teams
Reports of irritation or skin change from any center are reviewed clinically first and, where a pattern might exist, institutionally afterward. Patients contribute to this work simply by reporting changes to their care team.
