What the department studies

Biomechanics examines the mechanical relationship between a plate system and the tissue that supports it: load, movement, pressure distribution, edge behaviour and the cumulative effect of ordinary activity over years rather than weeks.

Where the questions come from

Most work begins with something clinicians noticed — a profile that performs differently in physically demanding patients, an attachment behaviour seen at revision, a pattern in how certain plans settle. Bench and simulation work follows the observation.

How it informs planning

Findings shape the profile ranges considered appropriate for particular plans and the activity guidance nursing gives patients. They do not produce a formula: individual planning remains a clinical judgement made with the patient in the room.
