Evaluation before availability
Candidate materials and surface treatments are studied in the National Center materials laboratory under the Materials Science department. Laboratory performance alone does not qualify a material; it must also be plannable, fabricable, wearable and reviewable over time.
The path to the portfolio
A material moves from laboratory evaluation, to bench and simulated wear study, to structured clinical evaluation under research governance, and only then to portfolio consideration. Most candidates do not complete the path, and that is a normal outcome.
Patient participation
Where a material is studied with patients, it is done under an approved research protocol with voluntary participation that is separate from clinical care decisions. Patients cannot request an experimental material as a clinical option.
Content is reviewed with the relevant clinical, nursing, materials or administrative department before publication.
